Screamer is an arcade style racing game for MS-DOS.
Gameplay[edit]
The game shares some graphical and gameplay style with Namco's Ridge Racer. The game features texture mappedpolygon-modelled tracks and cars.
Development[edit]
Software rendering is used in the game, due to the game's release before the widespread adoption of 3D graphics cards, unlike Screamer's three sequels Screamer 2, Screamer Rally and Screamer 4x4, that all utilized 3D hardware (in the case of Screamer 2, after a patch was released.[1] As a result, Screamer was one of the early games to really require a Pentium processor to run at full speed, particularly in SVGA mode.
The game's music was composed by Allister Brimble.[2]
Reception[edit]
A reviewer for Maximum commended the game for its high speed, replay sequences, smoothly scrolling graphics, selection of vehicles, numerous modes and options, overall high longevity, and low price point. He noted that the computer-controlled opponents follow a fixed course, and would even crash full speed into the player car rather than deviate from that course, but did not feel this was a bad thing. He gave the game 5 out of 5 stars.[3] A reviewer for Next Generation was also pleased with the graphics, selection of vehicles, and numerous modes. He praised the game for being more accessible than most racers, allowing players to begin racing without having to figure out the car's technical aspects, though he also criticized it as being 'simplistic'. He scored it 4 out of 5 stars, concluding that 'There may not be a lot to it, but the graphics, playability, and selection of cars with their different qualities make it a title worthy of a look.'[4]
The editors of Computer Games Magazine nominated Screamer as the best racing game of 2001, but ultimately gave the award to NASCAR Racing 4.[5]
An advertisement for the game, showing a burnt-out car wreckage with the slogan 'Every Christmas the roads are full of mad men. Join them.', aroused public outcry.[6]

Description of Screamer
Screamer is a great arcade racer in the style of Namco's Ridge Racer or Sega's Daytona USA - though way better than the PC conversion of the latter one.
From MobyGames' description: 'Screamer is a traditional arcade racing game. You can drive lots of different top cars, like a Corvette or a Porsche 911. The game has very different tracks, all well-designed with attention to detail and locale. Additionally, all tracks are available in backwards mode. If you think you're the best of the best, you can take on the Bullet car for the ultimate championship race. The graphics engine was very good for its time, providing extremely fast texture-mapped graphics on a 486.'
The game's smooth and very fast graphics -- fully textured -- give a great impression of speed. The controls are just right and the various game modes and nicely varied tracks offer many hours of fun action.
Definitely not to be missed, if you're looking for an arcade-style racer. Italian company Graffiti (now Milestone) surprised quite a few with this one, as their debut title Iron Assaultreally didn't promise a lot. BTW, it's recommended to choose the 320x200 graphics mode in the setup as the high-res mode is far too slow even on very fast computers.

if you cant get this game to work, please download a program called Dosbox (just google it).
Let's say your screamer directory is C:/Screamer. Open Dosbox and type: mount c c:/screamer - now type c: - type 'setup' to run the setup prog. Type 'screamer' to run the game. ignore the dashes and quotation marks.

Aye the BulletCar... 'So Ya Wanna Play Dirty' lolz what a mad game. The multiplayer over a bNc with t-cons & terminator plugs for the coax. VooDoo's Banshee, Matrox Dual Heads & Creative 4meg with the HollyWood expansion cards.... Those were the days. :)

Treat Screamer as a beta version. It's not complete, there are too many minor annoyances (e.g. finicky cornering) to make this enjoyable. Screamer 2 was a far more polished game, both in appearance and playability.

I think this might be one of the first 3d accelerated games. I remember I had a friend who bought a Voodoo card just so he could play this.
